Wearing EmbraceMini

This article explains how participants should wear EmbraceMini to ensure optimal data collection during monitoring.

Choose the wrist

The participant should wear EmbraceMini on the non-dominant hand, unless otherwise specified by the study protocol.

Position the device

Make sure the device is positioned correctly on the wrist:

  • The LED light points outward.
  • The button sits on the inside of the wrist.

The device should sit just above the wrist bone, flat against the skin.

Wearing EmbraceMini incorrectly may affect the quality of data collection.

Adjust the fit

Wear EmbraceMini snug but comfortable.

The device should stay in place and not move easily during daily activities.

It should not feel too tight or cause discomfort.

If the device slides up and down the forearm when the participant moves, the strap is too loose and the quality of the collected data may be affected.

Wearing EmbraceMini day and night

EmbraceMini is designed to be worn during daily activities, including during sleep. Participants should keep the device on continuously for the duration of the monitoring period, removing it only when required by the study protocol or to charge it.

Continuous wear matters: gaps in wear time appear as missing data and can affect digital biomarkers that rely on full day-and-night coverage, such as sleep detection.

Use with water

EmbraceMini is waterproof, and can be worn during exercise and while taking a shower.

However, avoid exposing EmbraceMini to hot water. Do not wear it in a hot tub, sauna, or steam room, or while taking a very hot shower.

If EmbraceMini is exposed to salt water, for example after swimming in the sea, rinse it under fresh water and dry it before the participant puts it back on.

Do not submerge EmbraceMini in water that is deeper than 3.3 feet/1 meter for longer than 30 minutes.

Bluetooth connectivity may not work if EmbraceMini is submerged in water. Data therefore cannot be transferred to the companion app during this time. Instead, the data will be stored in the local memory of EmbraceMini until it is re-connected to the companion device.

Do not wear EmbraceMini in case of the following scenarios:

  • On injured skin or other types of skin diseases located in the area where EmbraceMini is worn. Wear EmbraceMini only on intact skin.
  • When EmbraceMini appears to be damaged.
  • In case of skin irritation after prolonged use, it is suggested to change the recording location by wearing EmbraceMini on the other wrist, unless otherwise specified.
    • Make sure to clean EmbraceMini to avoid further irritation. Without regular cleaning, skin irritation is more likely to occur: Cleaning and Sanitizing your Empatica Wearable
    • If the skin becomes red, itchy, or if any pain is felt for more than 2-3 days even after cleaning, it is suggested to discontinue use.

The materials used in the manufacturing of EmbraceMini are widely used in wearable devices. Empatica performed biocompatibility tests according to the ISO 10993 standard series and has successfully passed the tests. Nevertheless, rare instances of sensitization may still occur, even in individuals without known allergies to device components.
