Charging EmbraceMini and Checking the Battery

Checking the EmbraceMini battery level, and correctly charging EmbraceMini, are fundamental to helping maximize data collection. This knowledge can help participants avoid the EmbraceMini running out of battery mid-data collection.

Check the battery charge level

There are 3 ways to check the EmbraceMini battery charge:

  1. Briefly press the front button of EmbraceMini to check the device status. EmbraceMini does not have a display, so the battery status is communicated by the LED. The LED indications are described below.

    1. The system is working correctly, and the battery has sufficient charge

    2. The battery level is low. Please charge EmbraceMini soon.

      ORANGE LED gentle - mini.gif

The LED can also report other statuses that are not related to the battery, such as the device having no active Bluetooth connection. See EmbraceMini LED colors and patterns.

  2. Tap the status card from the main screen of the Care Lab App to show the battery percentage of EmbraceMini. Note that EmbraceMini must be connected to the Care Lab App in order for the battery percentage to be updated and shown.

  3. The participant may also watch out for Care Lab App push notifications on the paired smartphone. If notifications are enabled (recommended), the Care Lab App will notify the user when EmbraceMini is fully charged and ready to be worn, and when EmbraceMini has a low battery and charging is required.

Battery level and warnings on the EmbraceMini LED

Once EmbraceMini is turned on and paired at least once, it will remain ON until the battery runs out. Participants can understand the different battery levels of EmbraceMini by checking the LED:

LED Meaning
Glowing white
(in the cable charger)
EmbraceMini is charging.
Off
(in the cable charger)
EmbraceMini is fully charged. To confirm, briefly press the front button: the LED lights up white for 1 second.
Slowly blinking orange
(cycles of 3 blinks)
Low battery; charge soon. EmbraceMini should be placed in the cable charger soon. This is shown in response to a button press, and when the device is taken off the charger before it is fully charged. The Care Lab App also reports Battery low and sends a push notification.
Continuously blinking orange Battery critical; charge now. EmbraceMini is about to turn off and should be placed in the cable charger as soon as possible. This warning repeats on its own until the device is charged, and can be dismissed with a short press of the front button. The Care Lab App shows Charge now.
Off
(not in the cable charger)
While EmbraceMini is recording normally, the LED stays off. Briefly press the front button to check the status.
If the LED does not respond to the button press, EmbraceMini is out of battery and has turned off. Data recording has stopped and the device needs to be placed in the cable charger.

A short press of the front button is used to dismiss a notification, such as a low battery warning, or to check the device status.

Note that a quickly blinking orange LED is a different warning, and is not related to the battery: it means EmbraceMini has stopped recording data. See EmbraceMini is not recording data.

Charging EmbraceMini

EmbraceMini comes with a cable charger included in the box. Follow these simple steps to charge EmbraceMini:

  1. Plug the cable charger into a standard 5V USB-C (Type C) power source.
  2. The cable charger and EmbraceMini will automatically attach through magnets. Make sure the LED and front button are visible while you slide EmbraceMini into the cable charger. You will feel a slight pull and EmbraceMini will snap into place.
Check that the golden contacts on EmbraceMini are touching the golden pins on the charger.
  3. Once the charging starts, the LED softly glows white, fading in and out. Data collection temporarily stops while the device is on charge.
A full charge takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  4. EmbraceMini is fully charged when the LED turns off. To confirm, briefly press the front button: the LED lights up white for 1 second.
  5. Gently remove EmbraceMini by holding the charger body in place and sliding out the device. The LED turns solid green for about a second, confirming that everything is in order and that recording has resumed. EmbraceMini is ready to be worn.

If the LED shows three slow orange blinks when you take EmbraceMini off the charger, the battery is still low: put the device back on the charger for longer.

If the LED does not glow white when EmbraceMini is placed in the cable charger, see EmbraceMini is not charging.

EmbraceMini has a Lithium-ion battery and has an estimated life of 2 years, or up to ~500 charging cycles. Beyond that, battery performance might not be as expected. As all rechargeable batteries are consumable components, the battery life will gradually decrease over time as a result of use or even non-use, based on multiple factors.

EmbraceMini can be stored in its original box for a maximum of 3 months without charging.
If EmbraceMini is not used for more than 90 days, make sure to charge it at least once every 3 months.
