Welcome to the Empatica Health Monitoring Platform. This article provides the comprehensive framework you need to set up and use the platform for data collection and monitoring. It describes each essential step, as well as additional guidelines on where to find more detailed information.
Follow these steps to set up and run your Empatica Health Monitoring Platform:
Academic & Basic Research
It is not necessary to activate the platform subscription; your Empatica wearable(s) are activated during shipping. The first step for users within the Academic & Basic Research plan is to sign up for a Care Lab Portal account. This is required so you can add participants and generate credentials that will be used to log into the Care Lab App.

Once your Care Lab Portal account has been set up, you can start adding Participant IDs.
Each Participant ID will have a unique set of login credentials, which will then be used to log the Participant into the Care Lab App.

The next step is to download the Care Lab App on a compatible smartphone (iOS or Android). The Care Lab App is the companion app for your Empatica wearable that enables the secure recording and transmission of raw data and digital biomarkers to the Empatica Cloud.

With the generated participant login credentials, the participant can now log into the Care Lab App. A step-by-step onboarding on the app will guide you with the pairing of your Empatica wearable.

Access the Care Lab Portal to view and manage the participants in your study. You can create and enroll new participants, reset participant credentials, and end the monitoring period of participants.

In the Care Lab Portal, you can view and monitor the data collection at any time. Oversee participants' wearing time and some of the digital biomarkers measured by the device.

Digital Biomarkers (1-minute average data in CSV format) can be easily downloaded directly from the Care Lab Portal, through the Download Hub page. This is the quickest way to obtain your digital biomarker data, as it does not require setting up access to your AWS S3 bucket.
If you need the full raw sensor data, or digital biomarkers in any other format, use the AWS S3 bucket described in the next step instead.
From the Care Lab Portal, you can generate and manage your Data Access Keys, which include an "Access Key ID" and "Secret Access Key". These Access Keys will then be used to securely access the following files in your AWS S3 bucket:
- Raw Data (Avro)
- Digital Biomarkers (CSV)
- Metadata (CSV)
You can find all the necessary information on data access in the Data Access Documentation, which is available in the Data Access Keys section of the Care Lab Portal.
→ Training Deck, from page 55, for detailed steps on how to generate your Access Key in the Care Lab Portal
→ Access our Data Access Documentation by clicking on 'LEARN MORE ABOUT DATA ACCESS KEYS' in the top-right corner of the Data Access Key page of the Care Lab Portal, to learn how to access your S3 bucket and understand the content of the data.
